The propane industry sets high standards for safety, and propane service companies like ours adhere to stringent government regulations. However, our customers must know about the safe handling and use of propane. That’s why we’ve put together some safety tips for you.

What to do if you smell gas

Propane does not have a natural scent, but propane producers add an odorant that smells like rotten eggs, spoiled meat or skunk spray, making a gas leak instantly recognizable. We also recommend that you install UL-listed gas detectors. Carbon monoxide detectors, while essential, don’t detect gas leaks.

If you smell gas, please follow these procedures:

• Leave your house — or the leak area — IMMEDIATELY.
• Put out any flames, including candles and cigarettes.
• Don’t use light switches, thermostats, telephones or mobile devices. These can produce a spark.
• If it is safe to do so, close the gas shutoff valve on your propane tank or cylinder.
• Call 911 and Trinity Gas only once you’re a safe distance away from the leak area.
• Allow emergency services and our propane service technicians enough time to check for escaped gas and make the necessary repairs.
• Even if you don’t smell gas anymore, do not return to the leak area or attempt to reopen your tank’s propane supply valve. A trained propane service technician must repair the leak, inspect your gas appliances and relight all pilots.
• Only return to your home once you receive permission from the emergency personnel or propane service technician.
